Major TriMet Service Reductions and I-84 Lane Closures Begin This Sunday

Significant Changes to TriMet Schedules

Starting today, Sunday, March 1, 2026, TriMet is implementing a second round of major service adjustments as part of a multi-year effort to address regional budget gaps. Commuters should be aware that these changes specifically target frequency during off-peak hours and weekend mornings. If you are heading out this morning, check the TriMet trip planner, as your usual bus may arrive less frequently.

  • Line 24 (Fremont/NW 18th): A permanent route change begins today. Service has been eliminated on N Kerby Avenue and N Russell Street. The new route travels from the Fremont Bridge directly to N Fremont Street, utilizing Vancouver and Williams avenues to form a more efficient loop.
  • Frequency Reductions: Lines 8, 48, 75, and 76 will see reduced service. For Sunday travelers, Line 8 and Line 48 will arrive less frequently before 10 a.m. Line 76 service to Beaverton will now end 30 minutes earlier on weekend nights.
  • Providence Park Access: Despite the cuts, TriMet continues its partnership with the Portland Timbers and Thorns. Fans with match tickets can still ride free to and from Providence Park today for the start of the March season.

Major Artery Alerts: I-84 and I-5

Travelers heading east toward the Columbia River Gorge will face significant delays starting this afternoon. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is beginning bridge replacement work at McCord Creek near Warrendale. Starting Sunday afternoon, I-84 will be reduced to a single lane in both eastbound and westbound directions. This bottleneck is expected to cause heavy congestion throughout the evening.

In the central city, the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project continues its initial construction phase. While daytime traffic should remain relatively clear, commuters should prepare for nighttime disruptions. Starting tonight at 10 p.m., expect lane closures on I-5 Northbound between the Oregon Convention Center and Greely Avenue as crews install temporary protective barriers. These closures will remain in place until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

Local Roadworks and Maintenance

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is also active today with essential maintenance. In Northeast and Southeast Portland, crews are performing gravel street service in the Brentwood-Darlington, Mt. Tabor, and Cully neighborhoods. While these are local residential roads, drivers should watch for flaggers and expect delays of up to 20 minutes in active work zones.

Finally, ODOT continues the installation of RealTime Variable Advisory Speed signs on I-5 South between the Ross Island Bridge and Terwilliger Boulevard. While no specific closures are scheduled for Sunday daytime, intermittent shoulder closures may be present.
