Delays on SE 82nd Avenue and MAX Blue Line Highlight Tuesday Morning Commute
Tuesday Morning Traffic and Transit Report: March 3, 2026
Good morning, Portland. As we settle into the first full work week of March, commuters are facing a combination of fresh transit service reductions and ongoing major infrastructure projects. While the morning rush is currently moving at typical speeds on the main interstate loops, specific arterial closures and light rail mechanical issues are creating localized friction for those heading into the city center.
TriMet: Mechanical Delays and New Service Realities
Commuters utilizing the MAX light rail system should be aware of an active service alert this morning. As of 12:17 AM, TriMet reported that the MAX Blue Line to Hillsboro is experiencing delays of up to 15 minutes. This disruption is due to a mechanical issue near the Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center. Crews are working to resolve the issue, but riders should expect staggered arrivals through the early morning hours.
Additionally, this is the first Tuesday following TriMet’s major service adjustments that went into effect on March 1. As part of a broader effort to address budget gaps, frequency has been reduced on several high-traffic bus lines during off-peak hours. Riders on Lines 8, 48, 75, and 76 will notice longer wait times before 8:00 AM. Furthermore, Line 24 has officially been rerouted, eliminating service on N Kerby Avenue and N Russell Street to streamline cross-town travel. Commuters are encouraged to check updated schedules on the TriMet website or mobile app.
Roadworks: I-5 and SE 82nd Avenue Impacts
On the roads, the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project continues its Phase 1A construction. While the most intensive lane closures occur overnight (10:00 PM to 5:00 AM) between Exit 302C and Greeley Avenue, morning drivers may still encounter lingering congestion as crews remove temporary protective barriers and transition the site for daytime traffic. This work, focusing on seismic retrofitting and deck repairs, is scheduled to continue through late 2026.
Surface street commuters in Southeast Portland should prepare for significant delays on SE 82nd Avenue. Major maintenance is underway between SE Foster Road and SE Lindy Street. Single-lane closures are in effect both day and night as crews work on repaving and installing new pedestrian safety beacons. This project is part of a multi-year effort to modernize the corridor, but it remains a primary bottleneck for north-south travel this week.
Eastside and Interstate Alerts
- I-84 East of Portland: For those commuting from the Columbia River Gorge, expect lane restrictions between the Sandy River and Multnomah Falls. Only one lane is open in each direction for culvert repairs and bridge maintenance near McCord Creek.
- I-5 South of Salem: A widening project between Kuebler and Delaney roads is active, which may affect those traveling between Portland and the state capital.
- Central City: While construction on the Earthquake Ready Burnside Bridge has been pushed back, expect minor utility work near the bridge approaches that may periodically affect sidewalk access.
Safe travels this morning. We recommend allowing an extra 10 to 15 minutes for your commute if your route involves SE 82nd Avenue or the MAX Blue Line.
