Wintry Mix and Nightly Closures Create Challenges for Portland Commuters

Wintry Mix and Morning Commute Conditions

Thursday, February 19, 2026, brings a complex set of challenges for Portland area commuters. Weather conditions are a primary concern this morning as the region faces a mix of light rain and potential snowfall. Meteorological reports indicate that sticking snow is possible at elevations above 500 feet across the metro area. While the heaviest snow is expected to taper off by mid-morning, commuters traveling through the West Hills or higher-elevation suburbs should prepare for slick spots and reduced visibility. Slowing down and increasing following distance is highly recommended for the morning rush hour.

I-5 Rose Quarter and South Portland Restrictions

Major construction continues to impact Interstate 5. The Rose Quarter Improvement Project is currently entering a phase of constructing stormwater facilities and seismic retrofitting, leading to intermittent nightly disruptions. Specifically, for those traveling through the central city, there are overnight lane closures on the I-5 southbound left lanes between the Oregon Convention Center and the Burnside Bridge. Additionally, the following freight and width restrictions are active today:

  • I-5 Southbound (MP 302.7 to 301.5): Nightly width restrictions of 14 feet are in effect between 10 PM and 5 AM.
  • I-5 Northbound (MP 301.59 to 301.96): Similar 14-foot width restrictions apply Monday through Friday nights.
  • I-5 Southbound (MP 302.33): A height restriction of 16 feet 2 inches is active during overnight hours near the I-405 interchange.

I-205 and Abernethy Bridge Updates

The I-205 Improvements Project remains a significant source of delays in the south metro area. Commuters using the Abernethy Bridge should note that the I-205 northbound off-ramp to OR 99E (Exit 9) is scheduled for a full closure tonight starting at 10 PM. Furthermore, the I-205 southbound off-ramp to OR 43 (Exit 8) will experience intermittent closures. On the local level, daytime flagging is scheduled for Clackamette Drive and Main Street in Oregon City today from 7 AM to 5 PM, which may cause localized bottlenecking during the midday hours.

Arterial Work and Public Transit Alerts

Surface street commuters should watch for daytime lane closures on OR 224 in Milwaukie between SE 17th Avenue and Rusk Road. In Beaverton, safety improvements on OR 8 (Canyon Road) will continue with nightly lane closures between 8 PM and 5 AM. Regarding public transit, TriMet has issued alerts for minor delays on most MAX lines this morning. Riders are also reminded to prepare for a significant set of service adjustments and frequency cuts scheduled to take effect across the bus network on March 1, 2026.
