Three-vehicle crash on westbound I-84 in Northeast Portland ends without serious injuries, police say

Early-morning wreck disrupted traffic near Northeast 145th Avenue
A three-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 84 in Northeast Portland early Saturday morning left multiple vehicles heavily damaged and temporarily disrupted freeway traffic, Portland police said. Officers responded shortly after 4 a.m. to the crash near Northeast 145th Avenue.
Police said no one was transported to a hospital and there were no reports of serious injuries. The crash nevertheless required a significant response because the damaged vehicles had to be removed from the freeway and the area had to be made safe for other drivers.
What investigators believe happened
Investigators said the sequence began when an Audi experienced mechanical problems. Police said the driver attempted to move to the side of the road. At that point, a Toyota Tundra struck the Audi from behind, police said.
Following the impact, police said both vehicles then collided with a large truck that was already parked on the shoulder. Police said their notes did not clearly identify the type of truck involved.
- Location: I-84 westbound near Northeast 145th Avenue
- Time of initial police response: just after 4 a.m. Saturday
- Vehicles involved: an Audi, a Toyota Tundra, and a large truck parked on the shoulder
- Injuries: no hospital transports reported; no serious injuries reported
Traffic impacts and clearance
Police said all three vehicles were badly damaged and required towing. That removal work, combined with the need to manage traffic around the crash site, caused delays for westbound drivers for a period of time during the early morning hours.
Authorities did not immediately release additional details such as driver identities, whether citations were issued, or the estimated duration of lane blockages. The circumstances of the Audi’s reported mechanical issue and the conditions leading to the rear-end collision remained part of the investigation.
Police said no one involved in the crash was taken to a hospital.
Why shoulder safety remains a recurring concern
While Saturday’s crash did not result in serious injuries, it illustrates the risks that can emerge when a vehicle slows unexpectedly on a freeway and when any vehicle is stopped on or near the shoulder. Police continue to urge drivers to reduce speed, remain alert for stopped vehicles, and change lanes when it is safe to do so—particularly during low-light hours when visibility is limited and reaction time is reduced.
The investigation into the crash remained ongoing as police documented the scene and coordinated vehicle removal.
