Threats naming President Trump preceded Portland police fatal shooting of suspect accused of federal agent impersonation

Police detail sequence leading to fatal Pearl District shooting
Portland police say a series of threats explicitly naming President Donald Trump preceded the fatal shooting of a suspect during the service of an arrest warrant in the Pearl District on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2026. The man, whose name had not been released as of Thursday afternoon pending formal identification and family notifications, was sought in connection with an incident at a grocery store days earlier.
The case blends allegations of impersonating a federal agent, an attempted shooting involving a malfunctioning firearm, and the discovery of written threats on ammunition. Authorities say the investigation involved coordination with the U.S. Secret Service.
Grocery-store confrontation and discovery of a loaded shotgun
Police said officers were dispatched at about 1:04 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, to a grocery store in the 1300 block of Northwest Lovejoy Street after a report of a threat with a weapon. Investigators say a suspect approached two uniformed security officers, falsely identified himself as an agent from the United States Secret Service, pointed a handgun at one security officer, and pulled the trigger. The gun did not fire, police said. After a scuffle, the suspect fled while still in possession of the handgun.
Police said the suspect left behind an instrument case containing a loaded shotgun. Officers seized the shotgun and found threatening messages written on shotgun shells that specifically named President Trump.
Warrant service, gas deployment, and fatal encounter
Investigators later identified the suspect and determined he lived in an apartment building in the Northwest 14th Avenue area. Police said they obtained an arrest warrant with charges including attempted assault in the first degree.
During the warrant operation early Thursday, police said the suspect did not communicate with a crisis negotiation team. Police reported that chemical agents were deployed inside the apartment in an effort to prompt him to exit. According to police and a spokesperson’s account of the operation, the suspect later exited while holding a handgun and pointed it at an officer. Two officers assigned to the bureau’s Special Emergency Reaction Team fired, police said.
Police said one officer reported the suspect had pointed a gun at him before shots were fired. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police said officers could see the suspect near a gun after the shooting and attempted to get him to move away from it. Paramedics who were staged for the incident were then brought forward; the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or other community members were reported injured.
What happens next
- Police said the suspect’s identity would be released after medical examiner confirmation and family notifications.
- The involved officers were placed on paid administrative leave, a standard step following an officer-involved shooting.
- The Portland Police Bureau’s Detective Division, led by the Homicide Unit and supported by other units, responded to investigate.
- The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is expected to review the incident as part of the post-shooting process.
The case remains under investigation, with law enforcement focusing on the earlier alleged attempted shooting, the reported federal-agent impersonation, and the threats written on shotgun shells.
