Security Alert Disrupts MAX Yellow Line and I-5 Maintenance Slows Interstate Bridge Access

Morning Transit Alert: MAX Yellow Line Service Disruption
Commuters utilizing TriMet this morning should prepare for significant disruptions on the MAX Yellow Line. Due to an ongoing security issue near PSU South at Southwest 5th Avenue and Jackson Street, the Yellow Line is currently only operating between the Expo Center and the Interstate/Rose Quarter stations. Riders needing to cross the Willamette River or access downtown are advised to board regular service buses to complete their trip. TriMet officials have not yet provided an estimated time for the resumption of full service.
Interstate 5: Maintenance and Roadworks Update
Traffic on Interstate 5 is seeing several localized impacts today. As of 4:19 AM this morning, maintenance crews have established a moving operation on the Interstate Bridge (MP 307.9 to 308.3) in both the northbound and southbound directions. While delays are currently estimated at under 20 minutes, drivers should exercise caution and be prepared to move over for worker safety. Near the I-405 North interchange, construction continues for the Rose Quarter Improvement Project. Fast lanes in both directions between the Oregon Convention Center and the Burnside Bridge are subject to intermittent overnight closures between 10 PM and 5 AM. Additional lane closures are expected tonight as barrier work continues.
Major Arteries and Regional Construction
- US 30 (NW St. Helens Road): Safety improvements and repaving continue between NW Bridge Avenue and NW Kittridge Avenue. Commuters should expect periodic daytime lane closures and pedestrian detours, with delays estimated at under 20 minutes.
- OR 217 Southbound: Expect lane and shoulder closures between MP 2 and MP 6 today. This area is known for short merging distances; drivers are encouraged to maintain safe following distances.
- OR 224 Westbound (Milwaukie): Starting tonight at 8 PM, the off-ramp to SE 17th Avenue and OR 99E Southbound will be closed for nightly maintenance. The closure will remain in effect until 6 AM tomorrow.
- I-5 Rose Quarter/South Portland: Real-time Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) sign installation is causing short-term shoulder closures south of downtown between the Ross Island Bridge and Terwilliger Boulevard.
Weather and Future Outlook
While today's commute remains dry with sunny skies and a high near 44°F, the National Weather Service is tracking a shift in conditions. A light snow forecast is in place for tomorrow, Thursday, January 22, which may impact morning visibility and traction. Additionally, TriMet riders are reminded that the public feedback window for proposed 2026 service reductions remains open until January 31. These proposals include adjustments to 35 bus lines and the shortening of the MAX Green Line to address budget gaps.
