República, a Pearl District Mexican tasting-menu destination in Portland, will close in February 2026

A nationally recognized restaurant prepares to serve its final meals
República, a Pearl District restaurant known for a Mexican-focused tasting menu and culinary storytelling, is scheduled to close in February 2026. The business has confirmed that service will continue through a final dinner on February 21, 2026, with reservations remaining available ahead of the closure.
The restaurant has operated in Portland since opening in November 2020. Its original concept combined daytime offerings such as guisados and masa-based dishes with an evening program that evolved into a more formal, multi-course format. República was launched as a collaboration led by owner Angel Medina alongside pastry chef Olivia Bartruff and chef Lauro Romero.
How República’s concept changed after its opening
Over time, República became known for an approach that paired Mexican culinary history with fine-dining presentation. The menu regularly highlighted ingredients less common in Portland Mexican restaurants, including items such as huitlacoche and chicatanas, and featured house nixtamalized masa as a recurring foundation for tortillas and other preparations.
The restaurant’s profile rose quickly. It was named Portland Monthly’s Restaurant of the Year in 2021 and later received national attention that included placement on a best-new-restaurants list and recognition in the James Beard Awards ecosystem as a semifinalist.
Relocation, leadership changes, and expansion into a restaurant group
República’s operations also shifted physically and organizationally. After beginning in the EcoTrust building, the restaurant later moved to a space near Powell’s Books, aligning with a period in which the broader República & Co. group expanded to include additional concepts in Portland. Those included the mezcal-focused cocktail lounge Comala and the restaurant Lilia Comedor, alongside projects that later closed.
In the years following the move, República cycled through multiple chefs in its kitchen leadership. Executive chef Dani Morales is listed by the company as leading the current kitchen, and the business has described maintaining a tasting menu while also offering à la carte options as part of its more recent format.
Factors cited in the decision to close
Medina has attributed the closure to a combination of financial and operational pressures, including a reported decline in demand that he linked to broader political conditions and tourism patterns. He has also described concerns about staff safety tied to immigration enforcement activity nationally, saying those concerns became central in the decision to end operations at República.
Final service date: February 21, 2026
Location: Northwest Portland’s Pearl District, near Powell’s Books
Related businesses: Lilia Comedor and Comala are expected to continue operating
República’s closure comes after five years marked by rapid acclaim, concept evolution, and the creation of a wider hospitality group in Northwest Portland.
