Portland police search ends without suspect as two officers recover after Sullivan’s Gulch shooting

Two officers hospitalized; investigation continues
A man suspected of shooting two Portland Police Bureau officers remained at large early Tuesday after an intensive overnight search in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood ended without an arrest.
The shooting occurred at about 8:21 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, after officers assigned to the bureau’s North Precinct responded to a “threat with weapon” call in the area of Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street. Police said officers located the suspect shortly afterward on Northeast Clackamas Street between Northeast 16th and Northeast 17th avenues, where the suspect opened fire and struck two officers.
Police said both officers were transported by ambulance to a hospital, treated, and were in stable condition.
Perimeter search, road closures, and public safety measures
Following the shooting, officers established a perimeter and restricted traffic while tactical resources searched the surrounding blocks. Authorities closed several streets between Northeast Broadway and Northeast Multnomah Street, and between Northeast 15th and Northeast 21st avenues, while asking residents within the perimeter to remain inside with doors and windows closed and locked.
Police said multiple specialized units were deployed, including the Special Emergency Reaction Team, the Crisis Negotiation Team, air support, unmanned aircraft systems, and K9 teams. The initial search concluded early Tuesday, and streets were reopened, but the suspect had not been located.
Suspect description and how police are asking the public to respond
Police described the suspect as a white man in his mid-30s with facial hair, wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes. Investigators said he was believed to be armed with a knife and a handgun. Police also reported he was seen carrying a black backpack and a green shopping bag.
Authorities said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Police have asked anyone who recognizes the suspect or has information about his current location to call 911.
