Commute Overview for Monday, February 9, 2026

Good morning, Portland commuters. As we start the second week of February, significant infrastructure projects are ramping up across the metro area. Today marks the beginning of several new road closures in Washington County and continued nightly restrictions on Interstate 5. Drivers should prepare for adjusted travel times, particularly those heading through the west-side suburbs or traveling late at night near the city center.

Major Road Closures and Local Detours

Several long-term and new projects are affecting surface streets today. Commuters should pay close attention to the following areas:

  • 107th Avenue: A full 24-hour road closure begins today, February 9, between NW Cornell Road and NW Reeves Street. This closure is for facility permit work and is expected to last through Friday, February 13.
  • 185th Avenue at Alderwood Drive: Expect ongoing delays due to sidewalk and lane closures for development work. Pedestrians are advised to use the east side of 185th Avenue while work continues through late February.
  • Brookman Road at Oberst Road: This intersection remains closed for utility work. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use marked alternate routes until mid-February.
  • River Road: The section between Davis Road and south of Oakhurst Street remains closed for deep sanitary sewer installation. This major project is not expected to wrap up until April 2026.
  • Highway 6 (Devils Lake Fork Bridge): For those commuting between Portland and the coast, bridge repairs begin this week near milepost 32. Expect daytime single-lane closures and automated flagging devices.

Interstate 5 Restrictions and Nighttime Work

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has multiple active work zones on I-5 through the Portland corridor:

  • I-5 Barrier Work: Starting tonight, February 9, and continuing through the week, expect intermittent nightly lane closures (10:00 PM to 5:00 AM) in both directions between the Oregon Convention Center and the Burnside Bridge.
  • Width and Height Restrictions: Northbound I-5 (MP 301.59 to 301.96) is restricted to a 14-foot width limit during night hours. Additionally, southbound I-5 near MP 302.33 has a height restriction of 16 feet 2 inches until February 20.

Public Transit and TriMet Updates

TriMet is operating on a regular weekday schedule today. However, riders should be aware of ongoing discussions regarding proposed 2026 service changes meant to address a $300 million budget gap. While current routes remain active, TriMet is expected to release an updated proposal on March 11. Commuters who utilize the Green Line or frequent-service bus lines are encouraged to stay tuned for future scheduling updates that may take effect later this summer.
