Two officers wounded; suspect search continues

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson addressed the shooting of two Portland Police Bureau officers after a Monday night call in the Sullivan’s Gulch area of Northeast Portland escalated into gunfire. Police said the officers were taken to a hospital, treated, and were in stable condition.

The shooting occurred on Monday, Jan. 19, 2026, shortly after 8:20 p.m., after officers assigned to the North Precinct responded to a report of a “threat with a weapon” near Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street. Investigators said officers located a suspect a few blocks away on Northeast Clackamas Street between Northeast 16th and 17th avenues, where shots were fired and two officers were struck.

Mayor’s remarks focus on officer safety and public cooperation

In public remarks following the incident, Wilson described the shooting as a reminder of the dangers police officers face while responding to calls for service. He said the city was concerned for the wounded officers and expressed gratitude that both were reported to be stable as of Tuesday morning, Jan. 20.

Wilson and Portland Police Bureau Chief Bob Day responded to the scene, police said.

Perimeter search ends without arrest

Police deployed tactical resources and established a perimeter in an effort to locate the shooter. Authorities said the initial search concluded early Tuesday and the suspect was not located. The investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to gather information and follow leads.

During the search, police closed multiple streets and limited movement within the perimeter, instructing people inside the area to stay indoors with doors and windows closed and locked. Streets were later reopened after the initial search wrapped up.

Suspect description and public safety guidance

Police described the suspect as a white male in his mid-30s with facial hair, wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes. Police said the suspect was believed to be armed with both a knife and a handgun, and was last seen carrying a black backpack and a green shopping bag.

  • The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
  • Authorities said the public should not approach the suspect.
  • Police asked anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or location to call 911.

Investigation led by Homicide Unit

The Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Police have asked tipsters to reference case number 26-18537 when providing information.

Police said additional details will be released when appropriate as investigators continue to develop information.

As of Tuesday morning, authorities had not announced an arrest or identified the suspect by name.
