Portland Fire & Rescue investigates overnight church roof fire, then extinguishes apartment bedroom blaze

Two overnight incidents in different parts of Portland
Portland Fire & Rescue crews responded overnight to two unrelated fires—one at a church building in North Portland and another in a Southwest Portland apartment complex—with officials reporting no injuries in either incident.
The first call came just before midnight, when firefighters were dispatched to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on North Willamette Boulevard. Crews arriving at the scene reported flames visible from the roof area of the building.
Church fire: roof-area damage and an active investigation
Firefighters brought the church fire under control while operating inside the building. During suppression efforts, crews cut an opening in the roof using a chainsaw, a tactic commonly used to ventilate heat and smoke and to improve access to concealed fire areas.
Officials said most damage was contained to the roof. The cause of the church fire was not immediately determined, and the incident remained under investigation Monday morning.
Apartment fire: bedroom blaze traced to a space heater
A second fire occurred several hours later at an apartment complex in the 7500 block of Southwest 71st Street. Firefighters were dispatched shortly before 5 a.m. and found fire burning in a second-floor bedroom.
Crews extinguished the fire quickly. Portland Fire & Rescue determined the cause was a space heater, an outcome that often prompts a closer look at heater placement, clearance from combustible materials, and whether the unit was operating as designed.
What officials have confirmed so far
Two separate fires occurred overnight, one at a church on North Willamette Boulevard and another at an apartment complex in Southwest Portland.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
The apartment fire’s cause was identified as a space heater.
The church fire’s cause had not been determined and remained under investigation.
Fire investigators typically work to determine ignition source and first fuel, especially when roof fires are involved and damage patterns can be affected by ventilation and suppression activities.
Next steps
In the church fire, investigators are expected to continue examining the origin area and any electrical, mechanical, or other potential ignition sources, while documenting damage and ruling out alternate causes. In the apartment case, crews have already identified a specific cause, and any follow-up is expected to focus on documentation, resident notifications, and confirming that the heater-related ignition scenario matches the physical evidence.
