Recall centers on frozen chicken fried rice sold nationwide

A Portland-area food manufacturer has initiated a large-scale recall involving frozen chicken fried rice sold under the Trader Joe’s label, after reports that the product may contain pieces of glass. The recall covers approximately 3,370,530 pounds of frozen, not-ready-to-eat chicken fried rice products produced for retail sale in the United States, with related products also distributed in Canada.

The affected U.S. item is packaged as “Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice” in 20-ounce plastic bags. The recall applies to packages marked with best-by dates ranging from September 8, 2026, through November 17, 2026. Consumers are advised to also check for the establishment number “P-18356” inside the USDA mark of inspection, which is used to identify the producing facility.

What triggered the action and what is known so far

The potential contamination came to light after the manufacturer reported receiving four consumer complaints indicating glass was found in the product. As of the recall announcement, there were no confirmed reports of injuries linked to consumption. Because glass fragments can cause injury if ingested, the recall is precautionary and focused on preventing harm from products that may still be stored in home freezers.

Foreign-material recalls typically focus on identification details that can be verified at home, including best-by dates and establishment numbers printed on packaging.

Products and identifying details

  • Product: Trader Joe’s Chicken Fried Rice (20-ounce plastic bag)
  • Best-by dates: 09/08/2026 through 11/17/2026
  • Establishment number: P-18356 (inside the USDA mark of inspection)

A separate product manufactured by the same company—Ajinomoto Yakitori Chicken with Japanese-Style Fried Rice in a 1.53-kilogram cardboard package containing six bags—was included in the same recall action but was distributed only in Canada. Those packages carry best-before dates from September 9, 2026, through November 12, 2026.

What consumers should do

Consumers who have the recalled Trader Joe’s chicken fried rice should not eat it. The recommended steps are to dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase. Anyone who believes they may have been injured after consuming the product should contact a health care provider. Food-safety officials have also warned that recalled items may remain in both retail and consumer freezers even after they are removed from store shelves, making at-home checks an important part of the recall’s effectiveness.

Recall effectiveness checks are typically conducted to confirm that affected products are no longer available for sale and that notification steps are carried out through distribution channels.
