Overview of Weekend Roadworks

Travelers and weekend commuters in the Portland metro area should prepare for several specific roadwork impacts and transit notices this Saturday, January 31, 2026. While the morning and afternoon hours are expected to see typical weekend traffic flows on major interstates, significant construction activity on 82nd Avenue and a series of overnight restrictions on the I-205 corridor will require attention from those traveling late into the evening.

I-205 Abernethy Bridge and Ramp Closures

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has scheduled major work on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge that will affect late-night travelers. Starting tonight at 10:00 PM, the northbound lanes of I-205 between Oregon City and West Linn (Mileposts 8.56 to 9.56) will be restricted to a width of 18 feet. This restriction is expected to remain in place until 8:00 AM Sunday morning.

Furthermore, the I-205 northbound Exit 9 off-ramp to OR99E northbound is scheduled for a full closure tonight. The closure begins at 10:00 PM and is slated to reopen by 8:00 AM on Sunday. Drivers who typically use this exit to access Oregon City or Milwaukie are advised to plan alternative routes or use the Gladstone exits to loop back to OR99E. These closures are part of the ongoing project to seismically brace and widen the bridge to improve regional earthquake resilience.

Building a Better 82nd Avenue

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) continues its extensive safety and infrastructure project along the 82nd Avenue corridor. While major heavy machinery may be less active on a Saturday, work zones remain in place with significant lane shifts. Currently, only one lane remains open in each direction along several stretches of NE and SE 82nd Avenue. Notable congestion points include the intersections near NE Siskiyou and SE Division, where crews are adjusting maintenance holes and constructing new traffic separators. Drivers should expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes through these zones and are urged to watch for temporary signage and sidewalk detours.

TriMet Alerts and Public Feedback Deadline

Public transit riders have a critical deadline today. TriMet has announced that Saturday, January 31, at 5:00 PM is the final opportunity for the public to submit feedback regarding the proposed 2026 transit service changes. These proposals include the potential elimination or adjustment of approximately 35 bus lines and changes to the MAX Green Line service at the Gateway Transit Center. Riders can visit the official TriMet website to view the maps and provide their comments before the survey portal closes.

Additionally, late-night MAX riders should prepare for the start of Robertson Tunnel maintenance beginning tomorrow. For tonight, regular Saturday schedules remain in effect, though riders are reminded that all Portland area transit—including buses, MAX, and the Portland Streetcar—will offer free rides this coming Wednesday, February 4, in observation of Rosa Parks' birthday.

Other Regional Notices

On US 30 (NW St. Helens Road), safety improvements between NW Bridge Avenue and NW Kittridge Avenue may cause periodic daytime lane closures as crews work on repaving and signal upgrades. On US 26, the Outer Powell Transportation Safety Project continues with narrow lanes and 10-foot width restrictions in place between SE 99th and SE 174th Avenues. Motorists in these areas should maintain lower speeds and prepare for intermittent flagging operations.
