Case remains open more than a year after discovery

Investigators are asking the public for help identifying an adult man whose remains were found in North Portland wetlands last year, as efforts to establish his identity have not produced a match through conventional methods.

The man’s remains were recovered in a marshy area near the St. Johns Bridge after workers clearing vegetation encountered skeletal material. The condition of the remains indicated he had likely been dead for about a year before he was found, making standard identification steps such as immediate visual recognition or recent missing-person matching more difficult.

What officials say is known so far

Officials have released a limited set of characteristics in an attempt to generate leads:

  • The remains are believed to be those of an adult male.
  • The man was estimated to be approximately 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall.
  • The cause and manner of death have not been determined.

Because the remains were described as skeletonized, investigators have treated the case as an identification effort first, with forensic examination continuing in parallel to determine whether any evidence can clarify how the man died.

Why identification can be slow in wetlands and waterways

When a person dies outdoors and remains undiscovered for an extended period, decomposition and environmental exposure can reduce the amount of usable information available to investigators. Wetlands and nearby waterways can also shift or obscure remains over time, complicating timelines and scene interpretation.

Officials emphasized that even small details from the public—such as recollections of a person who disappeared, distinctive clothing, or prior sightings in the area—can help narrow an identity search.

How the public can help

Authorities are encouraging anyone who believes they may know the man’s identity to contact local law enforcement or the medical examiner’s office with specific information, including names, approximate dates of last contact, and any relevant distinguishing features (for example, prior injuries, dental history, or known locations frequented).

Officials say the goal is to restore the man’s name and notify next of kin, and that identification may also help determine whether the death is linked to a criminal investigation, an accident, or other circumstances that require additional public safety action.

The case remains open.
