Public Safety: Final Day for Enhanced Traffic Safety Enforcement
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) concludes its two-week traffic safety enforcement mission today, Sunday, February 8, 2026. Working in conjunction with law enforcement agencies across the state, the bureau has utilized federal funding to increase patrols specifically focused on seat belt and child safety seat compliance. Oregon law mandates the correct use of safety belts under ORS 811.210, and today marks the final window for this specialized education and enforcement period. Parents are reminded to ensure all child seats are age-appropriate and correctly installed before the Monday morning commute.
Infrastructure: Bull Run Filtration and Lusted Road Access
The Portland Water Bureau continues construction on the Bull Run Filtration project, a multi-year effort to modernize the city’s water system by the 2027 federal deadline. For the current period, residents should be aware of significant traffic modifications on Lusted Road:
- Lusted Road (Altman to Hosner): Limited to local access only with one-way eastbound traffic patterns in effect through April.
- Lusted Road (County Line): Single-lane restrictions managed by temporary traffic signals remain active to facilitate pipeline installation.
The bureau will host a 'Coffee with the Contractor' session on February 12, allowing neighbors to receive direct progress reports on the filtration facility construction.
Governance: Upcoming City Council Agenda and Public Hearings
The City Council has published the formal agenda for its sessions scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, and Thursday, February 12, 2026. Key items for deliberation include the Affordable Housing Opportunities Project amendments and a proposed code change regarding nondiscrimination requirements for single-occupant restrooms. Additionally, the Council will review the February 2026 City Administrator Update and hold hearings for appointments to the Community Board for Police Accountability. Public testimony remains open, and interested residents must register at least one hour prior to the start of the meeting.
Public Health: American Heart Month and Immunization Reminders
Multnomah County health officials are highlighting American Heart Month throughout February, focusing on cardiovascular health and prevention. In tandem with state health initiatives, the county has also issued a critical reminder regarding the upcoming School Exclusion Day on February 25, 2026. All students in child care or K-12 schools must be up to date on required immunizations by that date or they will be ineligible to attend classes. Families are encouraged to visit local clinics or the Multnomah County Health Department to complete any missing vaccinations before the deadline.
Development: OMSI District and Water Avenue Renovation
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is moving forward with planning for the OMSI District renovation following the recent signing of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2026. Federal funding totaling $6.7 million has been allocated to support infrastructure improvements on the eastside, including the rebuilding of major intersections and the renovation of Water Avenue to support future housing and park developments. Initial site surveys and preliminary traffic planning for this corridor are currently active.
