I-205 Ramp Closures and I-5 Width Restrictions Highlight Tuesday’s Portland Commute
Morning Outlook and Traffic Conditions
Today is Tuesday, February 3, 2026, and commuters in the Portland metro area should prepare for a mix of evening ramp closures and ongoing interstate restrictions. While the morning rush is expected to remain steady, several long-term infrastructure projects are entering critical phases this week. Additionally, travelers should be aware of a NOAA Air Stagnation Advisory in effect for the region, which may lead to reduced visibility during the early morning hours due to trapped pollutants near the surface.
Major Interstate Impacts: I-205 and I-5
Construction on the I-205 Abernethy Bridge remains the primary focus for south-metro travelers. Starting tonight, Tuesday, Feb. 3, the southbound off-ramp to OR 99E (Exit 9) will be closed from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. This nightly closure will repeat through Friday morning as crews continue seismic upgrades and bridge widening. Motorists heading toward Oregon City or Gladstone during late-night hours are advised to use the 82nd Drive interchange as a detour.
On Interstate 5, significant restrictions are in place near the I-405 North interchange. Southbound I-5 between mileposts 302.7 and 301.5 is currently restricted to a width of 14 feet nightly from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Furthermore, a height restriction of 16 feet 2 inches is active at milepost 302.33. These measures support the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project, which is progressing through Phase 1A construction and is on track for completion in late 2026.
Local Roadworks and Safety Updates
- OR 217: Commuters should expect consistent shoulder closures between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Crews are working to mitigate congestion in the area caused by closely spaced interchanges.
- US 30 (NW St. Helens Road): Periodic daytime lane closures are in effect between NW Bridge Avenue and NW Kittridge Avenue. Ongoing work includes repaving and the installation of new traffic signals.
- 82nd Avenue: The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) continues its "Building a Better 82nd" initiative. While no full closures are scheduled for today, localized flagging and minor delays are expected near major pedestrian crossing sites as maintenance continues through the end of the year.
Public Transit and Commuter Tips
TriMet reports regular service across most of the MAX Light Rail and bus system. Following the major "A Better Red" expansion completed in late 2024, the Red Line continues to provide full service between PDX Airport and Hillsboro. Commuters are encouraged to use transit to avoid interstate congestion, particularly during the evening hours when bridge construction begins. Drivers should keep their headlights on during the morning inversion to ensure visibility during the air stagnation period.
