Friday Commute Overview

Portland commuters should prepare for a relatively clear morning rush hour on Friday, February 13, 2026, though localized delays are expected due to ongoing bridge and utility projects. However, the evening commute and nighttime travel will be significantly more challenging. As the Portland Winter Light Festival enters its final weekend, downtown traffic and pedestrian activity are expected to surge starting at 5:00 PM. Additionally, major ODOT construction projects have scheduled significant lane and ramp closures starting late this evening.

Major Roadworks and Lane Closures

  • I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project: Motorists should expect overnight lane closures on the northbound and southbound left lanes of I-5 between the Oregon Convention Center and the Burnside Bridge. These closures for barrier work begin at 10:00 PM tonight and are expected to conclude by 5:00 AM Saturday.
  • I-205 Abernethy Bridge (Oregon City): South of Portland, the I-205 corridor remains a major construction zone. On Friday night, northbound lane closures will begin at 10:00 PM and remain in place until 7:00 AM Saturday. Most critically, the ramp from I-205 northbound to OR 99E will be closed during these same hours.
  • OR 99E Closure: Beneath the Abernethy Bridge, OR 99E will be fully closed in both directions starting at 10:00 PM tonight. Commuters in Oregon City should also account for daytime flagging on Main Street from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, which may cause 20-minute delays for local traffic.
  • I-5 South Portland: Intermittent nighttime lane and shoulder closures continue between the Ross Island Bridge and Terwilliger Boulevard for the RealTime Signs project. While most work occurs after 8:00 PM, drivers should be alert for shifting patterns.

Public Transit and Special Events

The Portland Winter Light Festival is the primary event impacting the central city today. Anchor sites at Pioneer Courthouse Square, the World Trade Center, and the Electric Blocks will be active from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. TriMet riders should anticipate crowded MAX trains and buses on lines serving downtown and the inner Eastside. The Portland Streetcar will also see higher ridership near the Waterfront and Tilikum Crossing.

TriMet has not reported major system-wide disruptions for today, but passengers on Line 17 should remember that it remains rerouted via the Steel Bridge due to ongoing work near the Broadway Bridge. Commuters are encouraged to check real-time arrivals as festival crowds can lead to minor boarding delays.

Coast Travel Alert

For those planning a weekend getaway to the coast, the Devils Lake Fork Bridge project on Highway 6 (Wilson River Highway) is currently active. Expect daytime lane restrictions and automated flagging between 7:00 AM and noon today. Large vehicles should be aware of long-term weight limits on this route as repairs continue.
