Monday Commute Overview

Commuters in the Portland metro area should prepare for a typical Monday morning rush, but significant disruptions are slated for the evening and overnight hours. While peak morning traffic is expected to follow standard congestion patterns on I-5 and I-205, major infrastructure projects are triggering full closures and lane restrictions starting late tonight, January 26, 2026.

Major Roadwork and Bridge Closures

The most significant impact today involves the I-205 Abernethy Bridge. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has confirmed a full closure of the bridge in both directions tonight. This closure is necessary to safely remove an old sign structure as part of the ongoing I-205 Improvements Project. Travelers should take note of the following details:

  • Full Closure: I-205 will be closed in both directions between Exit 8 (West Linn) and Exit 9 (Oregon City) from 11:00 p.m. tonight until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
  • Ramp Impacts: The OR 99E on-ramp to I-205 southbound and the OR 43 on-ramp to I-205 northbound will also be closed during this window.
  • Detours: Regional traffic is advised to use OR 224, OR 99E, or I-5 as bypass routes. Local traffic can utilize the Oregon City-West Linn Arch Bridge.

On Interstate 5, the Rose Quarter Improvement Project continues to affect the corridor near the city center. Intermittent overnight lane closures are scheduled for the fast lanes on both northbound and southbound I-5 between the Oregon Convention Center and the Burnside Bridge. These closures will run from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. No detours are required for this specific work, but motorists should expect narrowed lanes and reduced speeds.

Additionally, I-5 southbound travelers south of downtown will encounter work between the Ross Island Bridge and Terwilliger Boulevard. Crews are installing RealTime Variable Advisory Speed signs, which may lead to short-term shoulder and lane closures throughout the night. Commuters should also be aware of height and width restrictions on I-5 near the I-84 and I-405 interchanges, where loads are limited to 14 feet 5 inches in width.

Public Transit and TriMet Alerts

TriMet is reporting several service alerts today that may impact those using public transportation. Commuters should verify their schedules before heading to platforms:

  • MAX Green Line: Currently experiencing a service alert; riders should check for possible minor delays or boarding changes, particularly at the Gateway Transit Center.
  • Bus Line 72: This high-ridership route along Killingsworth and 82nd Avenue currently has 10 active service alerts, ranging from stop relocations to temporary detours.
  • Portland Streetcar: Both the A-Loop and B-Loop are operating with active alerts, typically involving minor schedule adjustments or platform maintenance.

Commuters are also reminded that TriMet is currently seeking feedback on proposed 2026 service changes, which include potential adjustments to the Green Line and several bus routes in Southeast Portland and Gresham. The deadline for public comment is January 31.
